Who Are The Establishment Media and Who Are Reliable Information Sources?
Executive Summary
- The establishment media are major outlets that governments and billionaires control.
- This is a quick list.
Introduction
This list shows who are the establishment media and Big Tech and how they lean. Big Tech does not produce content but is a gatekeeper and censors content inconsistent with government, billionaires, and corporate interests.
Each media entity is controlled by billionaires, a government, or both.

See more on the concentration of media in the following article.
These sources are not only infused with undeclared financial biases, some of these sources not only trade political favors with the government, and the government pays some. This propagandization of the public is explained in the article The Establishment Media Lying About the US Removal of the Propaganda Act.
Who are the Reliable Sources?
A source that is of any large scale is usually owned by billionaires and is unreliable. The best sources are small, and the following list are all excellent sources.
- The Grey Zone
- Jimmy Dore (YouTube)
- CEPR, Center for Economic Policy Research
- Economic Policy Institute
- Michael Hudson
- Matt Stoller
- Glenn Greenwald
- Wikileaks
- Noam Chomsky
- Children’s Health Defense
- Truthout
- 911Truth
- Kim Iverson
- Breitbart
All of these sources provide consistently accurate information. Truthout normally does, but they also provide some PC material regarding things like immigration that is not accurate.
The establishment media lampoon Breitbart as being far right — however, Breitbart has a level of accuracy and low level of bias that no establishment media source can match. They offer extremely good coverage on the abuse of US immigration programs and what it does to US labor that no establishment media source will touch.
I have compared the accuracy of the establishment media to these sources and concluded that there is no reason to consume establishment media output in terms of finding out what is true.
Consuming establishment media means receiving information rigged to meet objectives not communicated to the audience.
These sources will provide information you will never learn from the establishment media. One example I will cover is the impact of the 1996 Telecommunications Act on media consolidation, which I will discuss in a moment. Another good example is on the Jan 6th coverage; the establishment media will tell you that Trump tried to undermine “democracy”; however, only in the non-establishment media will you learn the following.
- Democrats have been actively blocking the Green Party from getting onto the ballot using underhanded tactics.
- On Jan 5th and Jan 7th and every other day of the year, the Capital building is besieged by lobbyists who bribe the representatives — and none of the establishment sources have any problem with that.
- The attorney for the DNC stated in court when sued for cheating Bernie Sanders that votes do not have to be used to determine the nominee and that the DNC can pick the winner “out of a hat.” The reason the DNC did this is to say they cannot be sued for running rigged elections because they are not promising anyone that they do — even though it states that they do in their corporate charter. This is explained in the article How the DNC Statesd They Are Not Required to Tally Votes to Choose Candidates.
- Representatives sent to Congress are told how to vote by the leadership, eliminating the constituents’ votes.
- Finally, you won’t learn that the US was never set up as a democracy but rather a republic. The US fact that the US is not a democracy can’t be contradicted because it states in the constitution that the government is a republic or because the structure of the US was based on the Roman Republic (a democracy needs no senators, as there is no senate). The US is a “democracy” because the establishment media say it is a democracy. What the founding documents say on the matter is irrelevant. The US does not function as a republic — all representatives are told how to vote by leadership- just a handful of people. Nearly all legislation is written on K Street. In most cases, legislators are not given time to read legislation and could not understand it if they did. It has to be explained to them by lobbyists. The US functions as an oligarchy. The founders did not want a democracy, and democracies lost their reputations at least 1400 years ago. I cover why in the article How in the Federalist Papers James Madison Argued Against Democracy in Favor of a Republic.
And you certainly won’t learn that the US founders entirely opposed political parties, as I cover in the article How Political Parties and Big Tech and Media Factionalism Undermined the US Republic.
The Importance of a Lack of Reliance on Advertising
These sources are all similar in that they are not funded through advertising. When a source is funded by advertising, it changes its output to match the interests of advertisers. After Elon Musk bought Twitter, many companies dropped their advertising. Companies do not support freedom of speech. Companies support the right to communicate marketing messages that allow them to sell their product.
What Does the Establishment Billionaire Media Think of These Sources?
All of these media sources I provide are denigrated by the media establishment. Many of them did not go along with the covid falsehoods, which was very angering to Pfizer, a major advertiser in the establishment media. On the other hand, the establishment media faithfully presented information about the vaccines as if they came directly from Pfizer’s marketing department.
Good Sources Rely on Good Sources and Expose Bad Sources
Furthermore, the sources these sources point to are also generally quite good. Some sources, like Jimmy Dore, the Grey Zone, and many others, actively critique the establishment of media sources, providing a type of media education for the reader or viewer.
Once a good information source critiques content from an establishment media entity, as is done expertly in this video, it is extremely difficult to take that media seriously. Virtually the only thing mitigating the torrent of false information from the establishment is small, inconsequential sources from a revenue perspective.
Without these brave non-conformists, we would be entirely awash in nothing but corporate and government-controlled media, with very little ability to determine what was true.
The establishment media cannot contradict these sources as the authors tend to know much more than the media and lack financial conflicts.
The Importance of the Memory Hole to the Establishment
In Orwell’s 1984, the Memory Hole was how Big Brother erased previous statements and concepts presented by Big Brother. The establishment media intends to keep everything “current” so that there is no memory on the part of the public. This allows the establishment media to keep changing their stories without encountering inconsistencies.
The Impact of Financial Bias and Political Bias on Trust in Media
Since the mid-1970s, media in the US and elsewhere has become increasingly concentrated and corrupt. The US Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed for media concentration, which was disallowed previously. It was labeled as a modernization act. However, it turned the clock back to the era of William Randolf Hearst. His control over media was so great that he could create wars by publishing false information about another country to build support to engage in conflict.
This bill is critical to understanding the degenerated media environment the US has today.
The negative impact of the law cannot be overstated. The law, which was the first major reform of telecommunications policy since 1934, according to media scholar Robert McChesney, “is widely considered to be one of the three or four most important federal laws of this generation.” The act dramatically reduced important Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations on cross ownership, and allowed giant corporations to buy up thousands of media outlets across the country, increasing their monopoly on the flow of information in the United States and around the world.
Twenty years later the devastating impact of the legislation is undeniable: About 90 percent of the country’s major media companies are owned by six corporations.
When President Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act into law, he did so with great fanfare. The bill, which was lobbied for in great numbers by the communications and media industry, was sadly a bipartisan misadventure – only 3 percent of Congress voted against the bill: five senators and 16 members of the House, including then-Rep. Bernie Sanders.
At the time, President Clinton touted the law as “truly revolutionary legislation … that really embodies what we ought to be about as a country.” House Speaker Newt Gingrich boasted of projected consumer savings and private job growth. Rep. John Dingell (D-Michigan) “thanked God” for the bill that would “make this country the best served, the best educated and the most successful country … in all areas of communications.”
Despite all of these glowing words, the consequences of the bill were disastrous. The act “fueled a consolidation so profound that even insiders are surprised by its magnitude,” said one trade publication, according to Robert McChesney, in his book, Rich Media, Poor Democracy: Communication Politics in Dubious Times.
Before the ink was even dry on the 1996 Act,” wrote S. Derek Turner, research director of Free Press, in a 2009 report proposing a national broadband strategy, “the powerful media and telecommunications giants and their army of overpaid lobbyists went straight to work obstructing and undermining the competition the new law was intended to create.”
Local newspapers, too, have been stung by these deregulations. Gannett, for instance, owns more than 1,000 newspapers and 600 print periodicals. Layoffs have been the norm for the company, including at USA Today, the paper with the largest circulation in the country, where layoffs were described as a “total bloodbath” in the American Journalism Review. – Truthout
These quotes are from one of the trusted media sources I have listed above. I could find no such article published in the establishment media about the reality of the impact of the 1996 Telecommunications Act.
Establishment media are, in effect, media bullies and the shadow of the ultra-wealthy upon the public domain. They are controlled by billionaires who have consolidated the media industry and turned it over to corporate and government control. The establishment media lie to the public for elite interests and oppose the public and the public interest. Yet, at the same time, they want and need to be trusted sources for the public. To continue to deceive the public, they need to maintain the illusion that they have something to do with “journalism” and what is true. For example, USA Today, which does not even employ individuals qualified to fact-check any topic and that has been hollowed out by Gannett, that is the extruded sausage machine of media constantly provides “fact-checking” articles that happen to support corporate interests that advertise with them 100% of the time. You can see an analysis of USA Today’s fact-checking quality in the article USA Today Publishes Deceptive Fact Check About The Relationship Between Molnupiravir and Ivermectin.
Establishment media, in effect, pretend to be interested in what is accurate and pretend to be journalists. Still, they determine their content based on their financial conflicts and then write their articles backward from their economic interests to the conclusion. Their facts are based on how much they support their financial bias, and those that do not fit the financial preference are not included in their articles or analyses.
This model applies to investments. However, it applies the same way to all media. The companies that make money from investments pay the significant media entities to promote investing, altering the content to suit advertisers. As Internet delivery has reduced the money collected from readers, the media outlets’ orientation has become increasingly one-sided towards advertisers. Much of that money that used to support content creation has been gobbled up by Google and Facebook, which produce not content but are more than happy to censor content.
Understanding of Google and Facebook as Advertizing Engines
The vast majority of Google users do not know or do not focus on the fact that Google has several strong biases in its search results. One of these biases is to push commercial results upward. Close to 100% of Google’s revenue is from advertising. For an entirely advertising-funded company, Google has a lot of opinions about the integrity of search results that would not be accepted if Google’s entirely advertising model were more broadly published. Facebook is the same. Both Google and Facebook combine advertising with surveillance.
The Bias Built into Search Results By Big Tech
Google provides highly commercial results — and there is no setting in Google to change these results, as is covered in the article Why is There no Manual Adjustment or Preference Adjustment in Google Search?, and in the article Are There Any Search Engines That De-Emphasize Poor Accuracy Commercial Results?
The Impact of Financial Bias and Political Bias on Trust in Media
(Source: Gallup)
In the US, as the vast majority of media is Democrat-aligned, Republicans have the lowest faith in media. Notice that the trust in media has declined the least among Democrats. However, the Democrat-aligned individuals are wrong. They are being told what they want to hear — and they confuse that with accuracy.
Because establishment media is so consistently wrong, it is constantly losing credibility with the public, which causes it to try to discredit accurate media. This discrediting process is called “combating disinformation and misinformation.” Democrats are a political party that only exists in the US. However, in the US, the major Big Tech firms that serve as gatekeepers to much of the world are located. The Democrats control Big Tech; therefore, not only is the establishment media Democrat-aligned, but Big Tech is Democrat-aligned and aligned with the Pentagon and CIA. The US government is, as of 2012, allowed to directly pay media to run stories that the US government primarily writes. In addition, Big Tech censor material at the direction of the Democrats, Pentagon, and CIA.
- This is why Google deemphasized Tulsi Gabbard’s website and donation page after a successful debate performance.
- This is why Hunter Biden’s laptop material has been censored and emphasized and was not admitted to be real until after the 2020 election, and how even today, the information on the Biden laptop is de-emphasized.
- The situation is as simple as the Democratic National Party telling Google what to do and Google doing it.
All of this is why an excellent documentary on 9/11 exposing US government lies called Loose Change was deliberately pushed down in search results, and videos critiquing that documentary were artificially pushed upward, as I cover in the article How Big Tech Has Censored the 9-11 Documentary Loose Change.
- This means that when you go to Big Tech for information, that information has been “curated” by both corporations and governments.
- This means that Google, Twitter, and other major Big Tech firms are no longer reliable gatekeepers or “pointers” to information because they are censored and work with advertisers, the US government, and other governments.
- Facebook now works with the CIA to instigate (Color Revolutions, or “Arab Springs”) in countries the CIA has designated for regime change operations.
- I stopped using Google Search years ago after discovering their censorship and now use Brave Search.
Most Democrat voters have come to support censorship and restrictions on freedom of speech as long as their side can politically benefit.
This article is very much focused on the US. However, in Canada, all major establishment media entities are funded by the Canadian government and controlled by them.
Conclusion
The establishment media go by several names. One is the mainstream media or MSM. I have coined WOW media or “what oligarchs want” media. Billionaires on yachts call their media properties and tell them what they want to be said. You either do what they say, or you lose your job. Whatever the name applied, this is elite media pretending to be something else, pretending to have a public service function or pretending to inform the public. Their purpose is to misinform the public and allow billionaires to continue exploiting. The establishment media are just PR.
The trick is identifying them. Once you have a list of these media entities, they are easy to protect yourself from.
